Frequently Asked Questions

Fossil fuels – coal, oil, and gas – are by far the largest contributor to global climate change, accounting for over 75 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 90 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions. (UNEP)
Crossing the 1.5-degree Celsius threshold signifies aggravated climate change, leading to more severe weather events, ecosystem disruptions, and accelerated global warming, demanding urgent mitigation and adaptation efforts.
Greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide, trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere, creating a greenhouse gas effect. The trapped heat raises the earth’s average temperature, causing various impacts on weather patterns, sea levels, ecosystems & more.
Paris Agreement is an international treaty adopted in 2015 at the UNFCCC, COP21 conference. Its goal is to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Failure to address carbon emissions can lead to more severe & frequent climate-related disasters, biodiversity loss, disruption of ecosystems, climate refugees due to sea level rise & negative impact on global food & water resources.
Carbon Capture Storage can help mitigate emissions. The challenge is the fast scaling of technology with a window of less 7 years.
Reducing carbon emissions involves transitioning to cleaner energy resources, and renewables. Focus on improving energy efficiency, afforestation & reforestation, implementing policies to limit emissions from industrial processes.
Did you Know
- Metric of Gigatons – what does it mean?
One gigaton – 1 bn tons of CO2e. One Gt of annual emissions reductions is equivalent to taking 80% of the cars off the American roads. That is enough cars to circle the earth 24 times or to stand in 10 lanes from Cairo to Cape Town. (UNEP)
- Deforestation impact
Trees and forests play a crucial role in mitigating climate change. They are natural carbon sinks, absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere during photosynthesis and storing carbon in their biomass and soil. Large-scale deforestation, which involves the removal of trees and forests has the opposite effect.

- Fossil fuel dependency for energy
The burning of fossil fuels for energy production, such as electricity & heat are the largest source of CO2 emissions that leads to global warming. A significant portion of the GHG’s enveloping the Earth and retaining the sun’s heat stems from energy production.
